TICKLE FINISHES 12TH OVERALL IN ROUND 1 OF MX AT HANGTOWN
May 18, 2013
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - (Saturday, May 18, 2013) - The 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship kicked off its 12-round season Saturday afternoon at the infamous Hangtown Classic in Sacramento (Calif.) where near-perfect weather conditions made racing fast and furious.
RCH Racing’s Broc Tickle finished 14th in Moto No. 1 and 12TH in Moto No. 2 to earn a combined finish of 12TH. He’s currently 12th in the rider point standings, only five points shy of 10th.
Flying the Ram Truck brand livery aboard the No. 20 Ram/Sycuan Casino/RCH Racing/Suzuki RM-Z450, Tickle scored 14th in the first 15 minute timed qualifying session as the RCH rider searched for the preferred racing line while learning the nuisances of the rolling terrain and multiple obstacles.
The fast northern California track developed multiple lines with a much grittier racing surface when riders attacked the soft, wet dirt of Hangtown for the second timed qualifying session. Tickle would again finish 14th and was seeded 14th overall in combined qualifying with a time of 2:00.875. Honda rider Justin Barcia led the Group ‘A’ 450MX Class with a circuit of 1:57.971.
Starting 14th in Moto 1, Tickle had a seesaw performance. The Michigan native was pinned mid-pack in the 30-minute plus two lap moto. Fighting a tremendous amount of traffic and rear-tire roost (flying dirt), Tickle stumbled on Lap 3, falling seven positions to 22nd. He dug in over the next 20 minutes and vaulted eight positions to 16th. Tickle would gain two more positions in the final four laps to finish 14th.
“I think I was around 28th in the first sections on the track but made a bunch of passes and after the second lap, I was in 12th,” said Tickle. “Then, I lost the front end on lap 3. It was a little bit of a bummer that I did that but got it back up, got it going and passed some guys. The guys that I was around already were way out in front of me, so I had some work cut out for me to try to get close to them. The first moto, I felt pretty good.”
Ryan Villopoto earned the moto win followed by Ryan Dungey and James Stewart.
Tickle would again start 14th as the gate dropped for Moto No. 2. He was trapped in early traffic and was running 18th after the first circuit. Tickle charged hard and was up to 12th by Lap 8. He would ride in that spot the rest of the race, finishing 12th.
“I had somebody right in front of me and I wanted to pass ‘em, so I gave ‘er an extra charge there and found some good lines toward the end of the race,” said Tickle. “My last five or six laps were my best laps of the whole race. That was really good. It showed that I was strong.
“I’m a little bummed because I know where I should be. I normally shine a little better in outdoors and I am in good shape. I’m a little bummed with my final result but we got the first one out of the way. We have 22 more motos and time to knuckle down, get in there and be around the top five. If you look at the first moto, for instance, my fastest lap was at the end but the sixth-place guy, his last five laps were way slower than mine.”
Ryan Villopoto was dominant again, winning back-to-back motos in convincing fashion. Ryan Dungey finished second and James Stewart was third.
Villopoto was the overall winner (combined finishes of Motos 1 & 2) followed by Ryan Dungey (second) and James Stewart (third).
“You know, the competition is deep this year and everybody is healthy right now,” said Tickle. “The goal for the team and for myself is to do the best we can do. We know where we should be and that’s around fifth to eighth every weekend. That’s where I should be every moto.
“I didn’t feel a hundred percent comfortable on the bike. The team knows that, so we’re going to do our work this week to make it better. That’s why I’m kind of pumped. We still got a decent result. We’ve got some work to do this week, working on the shock a little bit, making me a little more comfortable out there.”
The 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship heads to Thunder Valley in Lakewood (Colo.) for Round 2 next weekend.
