Ryan Sipes at Spring Creek – Just not race ready yet.
August 15, 2006
Millville, Minn- Aug 15th, 2006 - Bad weather and nagging injuries were spoilers for Ryan Sipes and Team WBR Suzuki at the Spring Creek National on Sunday. A crowd of 24,500 turned out for the downpour and Round Nine of the 12-race Toyota AMA Motocross Championship in Millville, MN. This time Ryan Morais was out for a non-race related injury.
Sipes, who is still recovering from the level 3 concussion he received back in Colorado, seemed to be prepped for the podium in the second qualifier. In a great race, Sipes grabbed the holeshot and overcame Tommy Hahn for a first place finish.
In Moto One, a mid pack start made Sipes play catch up for the first part of the race. He had moved up to about 15th place when he went down in a turn and it took him awhile to get the bike started to rejoin the race in 35th place. He then pushed through the crowd again moving up to 18th. Unfortunately, his previous injury suddenly caught up with him and he became so dizzy that he had to pull the bike off the track to regroup.
In Moto Two, the weather turned went from bad to horrible, soaking the audience and riders. Sipes felt ok enough to ride but after an eighth position start, he was forced to pull over mid-race due to dizziness.
“The bikes were running great and handling well, but Ryan just wasn’t there yet physically,” said Team Manager Tony Sulek. “If it wasn’t for that, he would have been on the podium for sure.”
Sipes and the rest of Team WBR Suzuki will continue the hunt in Round 10 in Binghamton, NY this Sunday.
