AUTOTRADER/SUZUKI/JGRMX SACRAMENTO RACE REPORT

May 21, 2017

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (May 21, 2017) –  The Prairie City OHV Park near Sacramento, Calif. was host to the opening round of the 2017 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series.  It was the 49th annual running of what has been termed the Hangtown Classic.  The first motos were broadcast live on MAVTV, and the second motos aired live on the NBC Sports Network.  All of the racing action streamed live on the NBC Sports Gold Pro Motocross Pass.

Weston Peick made his return to racing for the season opener.  He and Justin Barcia raced the 450 Class on their Suzuki RM-Z450s while Kyle Cunningham contested the 250 Class on his RM-Z250 machine.  Matt Bisceglia, who is recovering from injury is expected to join Cunningham in 250 Class competition at approximately round four.

Cunningham started the first moto in 14th place.  By the halfway-mark he had advanced into the top-10, but suffered some type of mechanical issue and was unable to finish.  On lap two of the second moto while again in the top-10 he encountered yet another mechanical challenge and was not able to finish.  He was credited with 37th in moto one, and 38th in moto two which gave him 40th overall.

When the first 450 Class moto began Barcia had his work cut out for him after a first turn crash had him starting in almost last place.  Peick started the race in ninth.  Over the ensuing 35 or so minutes Barcia charged just outside of the top-10 all the way to 11th place.  Peick rode a steady race to earn 12th.  Barcia started moto two in third position while Peick was 10th.  On lap six Barcia moved to fourth, and on lap nine he was relegated to fifth, which is where he finished the moto.  Peick again remained steady throughout the race finishing 11th.  Barcia’s 11 – five moto results gave him ninth overall, Peick’s 12 - 11 scores equated to 11th overall.

The next round of the 12-race series will be at Glen Helen Motocross Park in San Bernardino, Calif. on May 27.  First motos will air live on MAVTV at 4:00 p.m. (EST), and second motos start at 6:00 p.m. (EST) on the NBC Sports Network.
