Yoshimura Suzuki Wraps up Productive Test at Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park

In spite of some inclement weather, Team Yoshimura Suzuki concluded a successful two-day test at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., today. Reigning AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin, 2005 AMA Superstock Champion Aaron Yates and their teammate Ben Spies put in laps aboard their respective Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-Rs on the scenic 2.5-mile road race course.

“This test was a very productive day and a half,” said Yoshimura Suzuki Team Manager Don Sakakura. “We had a full day yesterday but we lost this morning to weather. This is the first time that we’ve had the new Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R600 at this track and Ben spent a good portion of yesterday on the 600. Mat and Aaron spent time evaluating our new 2006 updates for the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 - both engine and chassis.”

“Everything is good,” responded Spies about testing the new-for-2006 GSX-R600. “I keep saying that the new GSX-R is a work in progress because it is. Every time I get on the new Suzuki, it gets better.”

“It was a good test,” agreed Mladin, who only races the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike. “We got through a lot of stuff that we probably needed to confirm before the start of the race season. We had Daytona, but that doesn’t really count. We got through things we needed to confirm before we come back here to race and get into the heart of the season.”

Yates, who’s recovering from a shoulder injury from a test earlier in the year, focused on both his Superstock GSX-R1000 as well as his Superbike. “I felt that the test went really well,” he said. “We got going pretty decently on the Superstock bike and we made some progress. On the Superbike, we addressed some areas where we’d been struggling. Now I’m just looking forward to being healthy and coming back for the race.”

Team Yoshimura Suzuki will return to Birmingham’s Barber Motorsports Park for round two of the AMA Superbike Championship the weekend of April 21 - 23, 2006.
